**********************************
"Jim Arrant Road in southwest Ouachita Parish, LA, is named for James A. Arrant. Home of Jim and Lina Arrant was about halfway between Caples Rd and Cheniere Dam Rd (La Hwy 3033) on the west side of Jim Arrant Rd. Nearby land parcels were "homesteaded" by John and Reddick Arrant abt. 1850's.
The 1900 US census shows James with his family (Calvin P and Florence Arrant)in Ward 5, Union Parish, LA. The 1910 census shows James, age 21, still in his parent’s home, but living in Ward 8, Ouachita Parish, LA. The 1920 census shows Jimmie A and Lina living in Ward 8, Ouachita Parish with Florence (mother) and 7 children as adjacent neighbors. Brother Emmitt was also nearby. His property eventually joined James’ property on the north side. The road between the two properties is today known as Emmett Arrant road.
Jim Arrant was a man of many occupations - farmer, logger, barber, etc. Uncle Herb said that his barber customers knew to show up to the house at noon so they would get a free lunch with their two-bit haircut. Herb also recalled that Papaw Jim worked for the WPA in the 30s on the construction of Caples Rd beyond (what is now) Jim Arrant Rd. A 1928 “Ouachita Citizen” newspaper article mentions “Jim Arant”, a “prosperous farmer of Ward 8” having a good crop of cotton.
Papaw Jim was described in his 1917-18 World War I Draft Registration record as being slender, tall and having brown hair and eyes. In his WWII registration record, taken in 1942, James Arrant is shown as 5 ft, 9 inches tall, weight 187, black hair, brown eyes and a ruddy complexion. In the 1940 census James is shown as having completed four years of high school. The school is unknown.
April 1937 & April 1942 newspaper articles show James Arrant appointed by Ouachita Parish School Board to serve as election commissioner for Ward 8, Precinct 1, at the parish barn on Jonesboro Road.
1939 – James Arrant served as a “messenger” from Mt Vernon Baptist Church, with James Wesley Saterfiel, who may have then been minister, to the Morehouse – Ouachita Baptist Association annual meeting.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cadeville.
From the obituary for James A Arrant - Feb. 1964 - . . ."died at his residence after a short illness."
"He was a retired farmer and member of the Masonic Lodge of Cadeville". "Pall bearers were R. N. Johnston, J. P. Armstrong, C. P. Owens, James Kelly, Howard Brown and Issac Burnett."
